SkillsBarter(-beta): The skills exchange portal

What is Skillsbarter? It is best described by examples:
  • Joe wants to brush up on his Japanese, but he needs one on one tutoring and currently cannot afford the expense of a private tutor. He searches skillsbarter and finds Hiroko, an exchange student from Japan who in turn needs help with her computer class. Coincidentally, Joe is a computer technician by day and they work out an arrangement to tutor each other.
  • Sam is a car mechanic who wants some advice on his investments. Bob, a stock analyst is looking for advice on what type of car to buy. They agree to meet and give each other unbiased advice.
  • Jill is a retired teacher who wants to contribute back to society in her spare time. She is knowledgeable in many areas and creates an account on skillsbarter to post up her skills. She asks for nothing in return and is glad to help anyone who needs her help.

Everyone in society has a unique footprint of skills/knowledge. These can be skills that are derived from their day jobs (electricians, financial planners, dog trainers) or their hobbies (RC planes, archery, skiing, paragliding) or even things that are not obvious (foreign languages, special connections to people, places). While it may sometimes be easy to hire someone for their expertise, their advice may not always be trustworthy especially if their commission is directly tied to how difficult your problem may be. There are certain instances where it may be better to find someone who is willing to help you for something not directly tied to money. Other times, it just makes more financial sense - especially when you have more time than money.

This website allows you to barter your skills with other people. You can arrange to barter, swap, or trade your skills, experience in any area with someone else through private email communications all free of charge.

Using Skillsbarter is easy. You are always encouraged to first create a profile. A profile will allow people to actively find you even if you are not actively searching. Profiles are very private. The only required field, your email address (in case others want to contact you) is never disclosed to others. If someone wants to contact you, they can do so only via this website and we will be the ones emailing you directly. Remember that the best way to contribute to Skillsbarter is by creating a profile and logging you unique skill footprint with us so that others may find you.
